Next Generation Internet

IoT devices allow us to create “smarter” systems. However, truly smart environments can only be developed by integrating humans into the overall design. Human actions, abilities, emotions, intents, and desires can largely affect the way the systems behave and perform, and thus they are able to either improve system performance or make it perform worse. As such, we must design our systems with the human factor in mind, not only as end-user but as a fully integrated “component” of the system. We now have at our disposal new means to perceive humans and better integrate them into emerging systems. Most humans always carry smartphones that have several sensors, can communicate with other devices and services, and even have the necessary processing power to make inferences about human states.

About me

I received my PhD in Informatics Engineering in 2001 from the University of Coimbra, where I am Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (DEEC) of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra and a Researcher of Institute for Systems Engineering and Computers at Coimbra (INESC Coimbra). I have been invited professor at several international universities.

My main research interests are Internet of Things, Network Protocols and Human-in-the-Loop. I was the supervisor of 12 PhD students (concluded), 2 of them in foreign universities. I have been serving as a reviewer and publishing in top conferences and journals in my expertise areas. My publications include 2 books, 5 book chapters and over 170 papers in refereed national and international conferences and magazines. I participated in European initiatives and projects, some of them as leader.  I actively participated in the organization of several international conferences and workshops, (e.g. I was the General Chair of ACM SenSys2021, General Vice-Chair of WoWMoM2016, General Chair of Mobiquitous2015, General Co-Chair of EWSN2010, Workshop Chair of IFIP Networking2006), and I was also involved in program committees of national and international conferences. I am a senior member of IEEE and a licensed Professional Engineer.

For two periods of three years each, I was the elected Coordinator of the Informatics Engineering Chapter for the centre region of Portugal of the Portuguese Engineering Association (Ordem dos Engenheiros). Currently, I am also one of the vice-directors of Portuguese Engineering Association – Center Region.
